Kinnelon
With just over 10,000 residents, Kinnelon has a suburban feel with low density population and parks and trails - Pyramid Mountain, Silas Condict Park and Stony Brook Park, just to mention a few. Today served by rt 23 and rt 287 as the main arteries, as well as the NYC bus transportation, the significant history of this town started in the 1700’s, when there were iron mines and charcoal furnaces, and it was called Charlotteburg (from Queen Charlotte). In the 1800’s, more environmentally friendly farms took their place attracting Dutch settlers. The name Kinnelon came from Mr Kinney who purchased 5,000 acres in the 1880’s as an estate, and the lake on the estate became Lake Kinnelon. This is now part of the residential gated community of Smoke Rise, one of the first of its kind in the US. With two elementary schools, a middle school and a high school, Kinnelon has been ranked as high as third in the state for its excellent school system.
