The Chathams (Borough and Township), totaling roughly 20,000 inhabitants, are rich in history. Chatham Borough, settled in 1710, still reflects its earlier roots with a charming downtown district along Main Street with old-fashioned signs in some of the shops and great restaurants like Scalini Fedeli or Serenade. There are numerous annual events in which it celebrates its small town character as well as offering a Farmers’ Market which operates at the railway station to NYC, from June to November. There are also trails to help discover the natural beauty and historical importance of this area. The Borough spills into the neighboring town of Chatham Township with which it shares some public services including the top ranked schools. The Township offers more spread out properties and has a more suburban feel, although it enjoys the closeness of public transportation to NYC, easy access to major highways, and the proximity of the upscale Short Hills Mall.
